I've been busy and I have not been to APK to do a formal review yet. There have been various school engagments taking up my time and so now that school is actually done for the summer in two weeks, I will be able to work on projects that I've had on the go and post pictures each week of what I am creating.
Yesterday was day four of L'Oreal Paris Fashion week in Toronto. I had the opportunity to take in Basch by Brandon Dwyer and Rudsak's sold out Fall/Winter 2011 collection. We had been invited, as a class, to design for Rudsak's collection that was showing, but things didn't work out as they had been promised. I imagine Evik ran into some problems with turning out his original collection on time and our little competition fell to the wayside.
Basch was nothing to write home about. A few of his pieces turned out, while the majority was ill fitted and tasteless. I can see some of his dresses making their way into the closets of Toronto's fashionista's, while the stripper wear will hopefully find it's way into the appropriate stores at the appropriate price points. Standouts included the black jersey dresses and the green silk tunic style pieces. The exposed zippers, mesh, and crotch shots are better left in the dark danceclubs, they don't belong on the runway at Toronto Fashion week. In a way, he has captured a small part of the cities vibrant night life and his hypersexual use of fabrics and cutouts brought an overall vibe of empowerment to women, but there's a fineline between sexual empowerement and just plain smut.
RUDSAK was brilliantly done with a heavily inspired biker feel to the collection, their choice of music for their runway show was spot on and the clothing was stellar. I really loved the men's pants and a few of the women's vests. Overall the collection is definitely a solid season and will be a must have for any Toronto fashion buff.
